Can I Keep the Name Of A Child Quddus?

QA-ID-0005

QUESTION

Is it permissible to keep the name: Mohammed Quddus?

ANSWER

It is not permissible to keep names that are specific to Allāh without adding ‘Abd (servant of) before it. Quddūs (the Most Holy) is a specific name of Allāh that cannot be used for others. It is not permissible to keep such a name without adding ‘Abd before it.

The alternative is to keep the name ‘Abd al-Quddūs (or written as “Abdul Quddūs) or to choose another name that is acceptable to keep.
