Fidyah Amount For Someone Who Cannot Fast

QA-ID-0022

QUESTION

What’s the fidya for someone who can’t fast at all?

ANSWER

If a person truly cannot fast in the month of Ramadān and they cannot even make up the fast in other months where the fast is much shorter due to a valid excuse such as terminal illness etc. then such a person can give fidyah for each fast.

Be aware that some people take this lightly and think if they cannot fast generally in Ramadān, they can give fidyah instead and it is enough. This is not correct. They must have no ability to be able to fast at any point in the year. Additionally, if a person gave fidyah as he felt he would not be able to fast in the future and then he gains the ability to fast, the fidyah amount he has given in the past becomes voluntary charity and he must now make up the fasts he missed.

The fidyah for each fast is one sadaqa e fitr amount.
