Missing The Fast As A Traveller

QA-ID-0039

QUESTION

Can you be kind and provide a detailed explanation in the rulings of fasting in Ramadan whilst travelling ie for Umrah.

Does the departure time and length of the journey affect the decision?

ANSWER

If a person departs from the outskirts of their city with the intention of travelling more than 57.5 miles continuously, they are considered a shar’ī traveller. A traveller can only miss the fast of Ramadān if they are a traveller before the break of dawn (subh sādiq). If one intends to depart later in the day after dawn, then they cannot skip fasting for that day since they were not considered a traveller at the beginning of the fast (see Radd al-Muhtār 2/431).

Although a person who is a traveller at dawn has the option to miss the fast, it is better to keep the fast if there is no hardship or difficulty for you.
