Praying Salah Wearing Shoes

QA-ID-0080

QUESTION

Please shed light on praying Salah with shoes on when the ground is wet etc. Are we allowed to do so?

ANSWER

If the shoes allow the toes to bend and press firmly on the ground, meeting the essential requirement of sajdah, then praying in such shoes is permissible and valid as long as they do not have any impurities on them (Radd al-Muhtār 1/657; al-Fatāwā al-Ridawiyyah 7/364 ). Examples of such shoes include soft-soled pumps or trainers with flexible fabric.

If the shoes prevent the toes from bending and pressing firmly on the ground, salāh in such shoes is not valid, as is the case with heavy boots or shoes made of thick leather with hard soles (al-Fatāwā al-Ridawiyyah 7/364).

When there is a valid reason to keep shoes on during salāh, and they allow the toes to bend properly while being free from impurities, it is permissible to pray with them on. However, if it is feasible to pray without such shoes, they should be removed, as shoes regularly worn for walking are not considered ideal for salāh (al-Fatāwā al-Ridawiyyah 7/364).

This ruling applies to salāh performed outside the masjid. Wearing shoes inside the masjid is regarded as disrespectful and leads to soiling the carpet of the masjid (Radd al-Muhtār 1/657).
