What to do if I Overpaid Zakat?

QA-ID-0093
QUESTION
I paid my Zakat and my wife paid her Zakat separately. After we double checked our amounts, we realised that I had paid extra Zakat of $3500 and she had paid $3000 less than she should have.
Question 1: If my wife gives me the $3000, will that be recognised as her having paid her full Zakat?
If the answer is ‘Yes’… then
Question 2: I will still have overpaid by $500. Can I use that $500 as credit for next years Zakat?

ANSWER

Since your wife paid $3,000 less than her total zakāt obligation, she must pay that amount immediately to fulfill her zakāt. She cannot give you the $3,000 for her zakāt to be valid, as you are not eligible to receive zakāt. As for the extra $3,500 you paid in zakāt this year, you can count it toward next year’s zakāt and deduct it from your total zakāt payable at that time.
