Do Parents Pay Zakat on their Child's Savings?

QA-ID-0093
QUESTION
If a child that is 2.5 years old has savings, do the parents have to pay zakat on this money?

ANSWER

Zakāt is not required on money that truly and genuinely belongs to a child. Zakāt only becomes obligatory once a person reaches puberty; it is not binding prior to that. Accordingly, parents are not required to pay zakāt on money that genuinely belongs to their minor child (see Hanafi fiqh texts).
