QUESTION

Am I allowed to have an injection while fasting?

ANSWER

It is permissible to receive an injection while fasting. Injections used for administering medication or vaccines, whether intravenous (into the veins) or intramuscular (into the muscles), do not invalidate the fast.

This is because with intramuscular injections, the medication disperses throughout the body via pores (masām) rather than following a specific passage (manfadh) to the stomach or brain. Similarly, intravenous injections allow medication to travel through the veins to the heart and then disperse throughout the body via the arteries (shiryān).

The fast is only invalidated when something enters the brain or stomach via a specific passage (manfadh) and not what may enter via indirect channels, as outlined in classical fiqh texts.
