Celebrating Birthdays And Anniversaries

QA-ID-0026

QUESTION

What is the ruling on celebrating birthdays and anniversaries?

ANSWER

If an individual refrains from engaging in impermissible actions, there is no problem with commemorating birthdays or anniversaries through permissible means such as giving gifts and sharing meals with loved ones, which are generally encouraged in Islam.

However, celebrations involving music, singing, dancing, mixed-gender gatherings, and inappropriate attire are not permissible. Such practices make celebrating birthdays or anniversaries in this manner unequivocally prohibited (harām).
