Deducting Gold Amount from Zakat the Following Year

QA-ID-0006

QUESTION

If someone has 100g of gold they need to pay Zakaat on, and they pay Zakaat for that in cash.

The following year, do they pay Zakaat on 100g of that gold or 97.5g of gold?

ANSWER

No. You pay zakāt on the full gold amount each year. You would only deduct the grams of the gold if you paid for zakāt using the actual gold, since it would no longer be in your ownership once given in zakāt.

However, retaining ownership of the actual gold and paying zakāt on the equivalent monetary value using cash does not allow for any deductions to the gold amount the next year.
