QUESTION
Is the standing position after ruku sunnah muakkadah or wajib? I have heard both rulings.
ANSWER
﷽
The standing position after rukū is known as qawmah. In Hanafī key texts, qawmah is generally regarded as sunnah. However, later research scholars, such as Ibn al-Humām, have classified qawmah as wājib. It is also considered wājib to remain in the qawmah position for the duration of one rukn, which is the time it takes to recite one tasbīh: subhānAllāh.
This wājib classification is supported by the evidences, particularly the Hadīth found in the Sahīhayn in which the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ instructed a man to repeat his prayer, stating that he had not prayed at all because he failed to perform certain actions, including qawmah, with proper ease.
Therefore, if someone omits qawmah unintentionally, they are required to perform sajdah of sahw. If they omit qawmah intentionally, they are required to repeat the prayer.
This is the position of the later Hanafī scholars and what is relied upon in the Hanafī school.
