Is Wudu Required When Reciting Qur'an From A Mobile Phone?

QA-ID-0078

QUESTION

What is the ruling on wudhu and praying the Quran shareef on your phone?

ANSWER

It is permissible to verbally recite the Qur’ān without wudū, as wudū is not required for verbal recitation as long as the Qur’ān itself or its verses are not physically touched. Wudū is, however, necessary when touching a physical copy of the Qur’ān (mushaf) or its verses.

Regarding touching the Qur’ān on a mobile phone or tablet without wudū, the rulings are as follows:

Holding the outer parts of the device when the Qur’ān app is installed is permissible.

Touching the outer parts of the device while verses of the Qur’ān are displayed on the screen is also permissible.

Touching the sides of the screen, where there is an empty space while the verses are displayed, is also permissible.

Touching the part of the screen where the verses of the Qur’ān are displayed, and where the finger is directly touching those verses, should be avoided out of caution unless a person has wudū, as this is similar to touching physical verses of the Qur’ān, which requires wudū. However, since the verses are digital and behind a screen, they do not carry the same ruling as verses written on paper. Therefore, the recommendation is to be cautious and avoid touching the verses directly on screens.
