QUESTION
When we travel to Umrah we see that many local Arabs have the habit of leaving the recording of the Qur’an playing in the background in the car while driving and common areas in hotel reception etc. The question is, should we compulsorily listen to it and will we be sinful if we go about doing our work?
ANSWER
﷽
Respecting the Qur’ān and listening to it attentively when it is being recited or played is mandatory. However, if people are playing the Qur’ān or reciting the Qur’ān loudly in places where people will not listen attentively, then the sin is on them and not you (see Bahār e Sharī’ah 3/552). This is because they should not be playing the Qur’ān in places where people are busy with other things. This is against the respect of the Qur’ān.
If the Qur’ān is being played in the car and no one is listening to it, then you should request the driver to turn it off.
