Reciting Surah Al-Fatiha In Janazah Prayers

QA-ID-0079

QUESTION

In Janazah salah, I’ve heard that you can pray surah fatiha after third takbeer with the intention of dua not quran, is this true?

ANSWER

In Janāzah prayers, after the third takbīr, it is sunnah to make duʿā for yourself, the deceased, and all of the believers. It is recommended to recite the specific duʿās found in Prophetic reports.

While Qur’ān cannot be recited with the intention of Qur’ānic recitation in Janāzah prayers, certain Qur’ānic verses that carry the meaning of duʿā may be recited with the intention of duʿā. A person may therefore recite Sūrah al-Fātihah with the intention of duʿā, not Qur’ānic recitation (Radd al-Muhtār 2/213-214). Qur’ānic recitation in Janāzah prayers is prohibited according to the Hanafīs based on the narrations from our masters ʿUmar, Ibn ʿUmar, ʿAlī, and Abū Hurayrah – Allāh be pleased with them all (see ʿUmdah al-Qārī; Muwattāʾ al-Imām Mālik).
