Spraying Medicine in the Ear While Fasting

QA-ID-0003

QUESTION

I have an appointment tomorrow at the hospital for my ear. If they spray something in my ear, will it invalidate my fast?

ANSWER

Entering medicine or liquid into the ear whereby it travels below the eardrum invalidates the fast.

If the spray is only on the outer part of the ear, then there is no issue and it does not invalidate the fast. If the spray is in the ear canal, then this will invalidate the fast if it travels below the eardrum. In such a case, you should postpone the appointment until after Ramadan.
