Do I Have To Pray Sunnah Mu'akkadah While Traveling?

QA-ID-0038

QUESTION

  1. What is ruling of Sunnah Muakkadah for Musafir?
  2. Can Musafir pray qadha umri instead of Sunnah Muakkadah particularly taraweeh?

ANSWER

If a person is a shar’ī traveller (57.5 miles or more continous journey) and is in the state of ease during the journey, it is recommended for such a person to perform the sunnah mu’akkadah (emphasised) prayers and not neglect them. However, if they do miss these sunnah prayers, the ruling differs from that of a resident because the emphasis on these sunnah prayers during travel is not the same as when one is a resident, given that traveling itself is considered a form of general hardship (See Fatāwā Amjadiyyah 1/284). Habitually missing the sunnah mu’akkadah prayers while traveling does not incur sin, unlike when a person is a resident.

This ruling applies to all sunnah prayers except for the sunnah prayers of Fajr. They should not be neglected even while traveling, as they are close to wājib.

As such, if an individual is a shar’ī traveller and opts to perform qadā (missed) prayers instead of tarāwīh, it is not considered sinful, although it is preferable not to entirely forgo tarāwīh when a person is in a state of ease.
