The Ruling On Hair Transplant Surgery

QA-ID-0043

QUESTION

Are hair transplants permissible, particularly for a young man who is suffering from balding at an early age?

ANSWER

Scholars differ about hair transplant surgery.

As per the view of some of our scholars, premature balding is considered a defect and hair transplantation is considered a remedy for this defect. As such, undergoing hair transplant surgery, where an individual’s own hair is relocated from one part of the scalp to another, is permissible. This type of procedure does not fall under wasl al-sha’r (attaching hair to one’s own hair) which has been prohibited in the hadīth.

However, it is only permissible to use one’s own hair for this procedure, not that of another individual. This is the fatwā of the Shar’ī Council of India Bareilly (Seminar 19, Decision 3, 2023).

Other scholars hold the view that it is not permissible because it involves a surgery that causes unnecessary harm to the body. This is the position of some of our teachers.
