Unable To Identify Correct Annual Zakat Date

QA-ID-0055

QUESTION

I’ve always paid my zakat in ramzan because that’s what I thought you had to do..

I don’t know my annual zakat date how do i work that out. I only know I started work when I was 17 and earned £100 a week. I am 50 now and have always paid my zakat in ramzan. Will I be sinful for this? Please advise moulana.

ANSWER

If you are unable to recall the exact date you first became the owner of the threshold (nisāb) due to the length of time that has passed, you can select an Islamic date after careful consideration and adhere to it consistently for giving zakāt. By doing so, you will not be considered sinful—in shā Allāh.
