Vomiting Then Eating Something In Ramadan

QA-ID-0044

QUESTION

If one unintentionally vomited a mouthful, and then ate after that as they thought their fast had broken due to vomiting (not knowing the ruling), do they have to perform Kaffarah or is Qadhaa sufficient?

ANSWER

Vomiting that occurs on its own, even if it is a mouthful, does not invalidate the fast.

However, if someone mistakenly believes their fast is broken after vomiting and consumes something, then the fast is now broken, and they must make up for the fast later (qadā) . Kaffarah is not required in this case. Nonetheless, they are still obliged to abstain from eating throughout the day and remain like a fasting individual out of respect for the sanctity of Ramadān.
